Lack of Posting. . .

So every blog I’ve read about broken jaws seems to get to this point, the point where they pretty much stop posting. I don’t have much to report on.  I feel pretty normal now.  My jaw is still sore if I open too wide, but overall I don’t feel like I have many limits with food.  The biggest thing would be I don’t really enjoy eating sandwiches yet. I can eat them if I try, but it is a lot of work and usually very messy. If that is the only option, I usually try to get a wrap rather than a big piece of bread.

If you find my blog because you have recently broke your jaw, feel free to comment to me if you have any questions.  If you decide to keep your own blog, I’d love to add it to my blog roll.  That said, it always makes me a little sad when I check the hits on the blog and there is a big spike.  I assume that means someone else has broken their jaw and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.  I’m glad I can hopefully provide others with a little help to get through it.  Keep your head up and it will be behind you before you know it!

3 Week Update

So it has been a little over three weeks since I go the wires off. I feel like I’m eating 90%+ of foods.  I’ve had a steak, a good piece of sirlion that was not tough.  I can eat a sandwich if it isn’t too big or on hard bread like a roll or a bagel.  I have not tried an apple and don’t think I’m ready to eat one whole yet.  I can comfortably get two fingers into my mouth with a very minimal amount of extra space.  I’ve also been regularly eating salad which is so nice since we have a garden full of fresh veggies! Overall I’m finding it easier to go out to dinner and even to cook.  If something is too hard to eat, I just cut it down to a more manageable size.

Milestone!

I ate a Subway sandwich today.  I opted for flat bread rather than their standard bread, but still, I ate the whole thing with no utensils! When we went there I told myself if I couldn’t eat it, I’d just dump it all on a plate and eat it like a salad, but there was no need for that! I feel like I’ve made a lot of food progress in the last couple of days.  I can bite into foods pretty well and have a decent opening. I am currently at about two fingers width, 16 days post wires.

I can finally bite into foods with my front teeth.  It is nice to not have to cut everything as tiny.  I’m far from full strength, but it is an improvement.

My mouth is a little sore today. I had two dentist appointments in a row this week, so it is to be expected.  They were very gentle, but it still was tough holding my mouth open that long.  They want me to come back in 3 months for another cleaning since it was tough to get to some spots.

Today I met with the dentist. He did cavity x-rays, but couldn’t get all of the done since I couldn’t open my mouth all the way.  He said he didn’t see any cavities which was honestly a little bit of a surprise!  He capped my tooth.  It feels a little strange, more because I’ve become used to it not being there and now it it.  I go back tomorrow to meet with the hygienist for a cleaning.

Small Update

19 Jul

No huge updates from me.  I go to the dentist this week to talk about fixing my chipped tooth and to get a cleaning.  I have not had a lot of progress opening my mouth any further.  I feel like I’m gaining some variety when eating food. I’ve been eating some chewier food like a luna bar.  I also had salad last night, and it was not nearly as painful as I expected.

Facing my Fear

On Tuesday I got back on my bike for the first time since the crash.  I wasn’t too nervous about it before hand.  However, when I first got on the bike my heart was pounding. It took about two miles for me to get comfortable.  Once I got over all the nerves I really enjoyed my ride.  It felt so good to do what I love again and get a good workout.  I could tell I was slightly more timid and my eyes were glued to the road the whole time.  In time I’m sure I’ll get over the fear and relax a little bit.

If you broke your jaw participating in a sport I encourage you to get back to it as soon as you are able to.  It mentally is challenging at first, but once you do it feels really good.

1 Week Wireless Update

The wires have been off for a week now! I have been enjoying being able to eat real food again! I’ve been keeping my food relatively soft, but haven’t limited myself too much. Some examples of meals:

  • Pizza, cut up into bite sized pieces
  • Chicken w/ squash
  • Burrito Bowl from Qdoba (pulled pork)
  • Eggs in many forms (omelets, scrambled, fried)
  • Salmon w/ grilled veggies
  • Pasta cooked a little softer than I normally like, but not super soft

I find eating doesn’t hurt as long as I approach it the right way by putting small bites in my mouth.  I ate a cracker the other day, the piece was too big and it got stuck in between my teeth and my cheek. I was at meeting with people watching so I didn’t want to stick my finger in mouth and sweep it out. It took a little work, but I got it back to where I could eat it.  I can’t eat any type of sandwich yet, which is kind-of hard since it is summer.  It seems they are often a choice at parties/events.

Usually by the end of the night I’m a bit sore. This is most true on days that I talked a lot of ate a lot! Lately I’ve been doing both. It’s probably a good thing for me though to actually use my mouth.

Wireless Day 5

I feel like my jaw has not loosened up much since day 2 or so.  I guess that is just part of the healing process. I scheduled an appointment with the dentist next week. I have an hour with the actual dentist to talk about my jaw and getting my chipped tooth repaired, then I have cleaning the following day.  It sounds like my dentist specializes in jaw therapy, so he will give me some exercises to help it heal and make sure I don’t get any TMJ issues.  I’ll be glad to get some exercises and a cleaning, but overall going to the dentist is one of my least favorite things to do.

No big advances in the food category. I can’t wait until chewing is a little easier. I’m really looking forward to a fresh salad from our garden.

Wireless Day 4

12 Jul

No real progress on Day 4.  My teeth are a little less sore.   I ate pizza for the first time since having my wires removed! I was at a World Cup party we had pizza.  It was so nice to be able to participate in food eating with everyone! I had to cut the pizza into pieces, but it was still good!

I like to read at night before I go to bed. I’ve started a new stretching routine while reading. I’ll hold my mouth open as far as I can for one page, then rest for the next page. I do this until I stop reading.  I woke up a little less sore after doing this.

I had a dream that the doctor forgot to take the arch bars off my bottom teeth. I could feel the wires behind my teeth and started to freak out about going back to the hospital to have them removed.
