1 Week Wireless Update

15 Jul

The wires have been off for a week now! I have been enjoying being able to eat real food again! I’ve been keeping my food relatively soft, but haven’t limited myself too much. Some examples of meals:

  • Pizza, cut up into bite sized pieces
  • Chicken w/ squash
  • Burrito Bowl from Qdoba (pulled pork)
  • Eggs in many forms (omelets, scrambled, fried)
  • Salmon w/ grilled veggies
  • Pasta cooked a little softer than I normally like, but not super soft

I find eating doesn’t hurt as long as I approach it the right way by putting small bites in my mouth.  I ate a cracker the other day, the piece was too big and it got stuck in between my teeth and my cheek. I was at meeting with people watching so I didn’t want to stick my finger in mouth and sweep it out. It took a little work, but I got it back to where I could eat it.  I can’t eat any type of sandwich yet, which is kind-of hard since it is summer.  It seems they are often a choice at parties/events.

Usually by the end of the night I’m a bit sore. This is most true on days that I talked a lot of ate a lot! Lately I’ve been doing both. It’s probably a good thing for me though to actually use my mouth.

My Morning Shake

Joy Bauer did a segment on the Today Show that featured almost the same smoothie that I drank while wired shut!
Natural Peanut Butter
Banana
Yogurt
Milk
I added protein powder too

Good Luck Maeke!

Maeke and I met through my blog, she had her wires put on 5 days after me and they are coming off today!

Enjoy your new found freedom!

Wireless Day 5

13 Jul

I feel like my jaw has not loosened up much since day 2 or so.  I guess that is just part of the healing process. I scheduled an appointment with the dentist next week. I have an hour with the actual dentist to talk about my jaw and getting my chipped tooth repaired, then I have cleaning the following day.  It sounds like my dentist specializes in jaw therapy, so he will give me some exercises to help it heal and make sure I don’t get any TMJ issues.  I’ll be glad to get some exercises and a cleaning, but overall going to the dentist is one of my least favorite things to do.

No big advances in the food category. I can’t wait until chewing is a little easier. I’m really looking forward to a fresh salad from our garden.

Wireless Day 4

12 Jul

No real progress on Day 4.  My teeth are a little less sore.   I ate pizza for the first time since having my wires removed! I was at a World Cup party we had pizza.  It was so nice to be able to participate in food eating with everyone! I had to cut the pizza into pieces, but it was still good!

I like to read at night before I go to bed. I’ve started a new stretching routine while reading. I’ll hold my mouth open as far as I can for one page, then rest for the next page. I do this until I stop reading.  I woke up a little less sore after doing this.

I had a dream that the doctor forgot to take the arch bars off my bottom teeth. I could feel the wires behind my teeth and started to freak out about going back to the hospital to have them removed.

Wireless Day 2 & 3

10 Jul

I’ve been feeling pretty good.  My teeth hurt a little bit less than they did on day one and they are not nearly as black looking. I’m guessing that was just some type of bruising from being clamped together. There seems to be a correlation between the pain and how black they looked. I can almost open my mouth as wide as two fingers.  One of the biggest things I’m really enjoying is being able to breathe again! We moved a lot of furniture around the house today and I never felt winded.  Tomorrow we are planning on going for a bike ride, my first since the crash.

I’ve been eating solids, but soft solids.  Yesterday was Cream of Wheat, macaroni and cheese and then cod with rice and veggies for dinner.  Today I had scrambled eggs, pasta, chicken and squash. It feels so good to be able to actually eat dinner with my husband again!

Wireless Day 1

9 Jul

I was out of the removal surgery by 8 am, so I had a full day 1.  By the end I could open my mouth about 1.5 fingers. I got two fingers in after doing some stretches with my jaw. I tried to take a nap all day, but couldn’t. It may have been because I had a cup of coffee for the first time in 5 weeks at breakfast!  I ate humus with flour tortillas for lunch. I tore them into bite sized pieces. It was a little painful, but not horrible.  I had a cheese stick for a snack.  I let it sit out a little to warm up so it’d be a little softer.  That was pretty easy to eat.  For dinner we had ravioli with pesto. Again, I broke it into bite sized pieces to limit chewing and especially breaking it apart with my front teeth.  I ate my whole plate and for the first time chewed with my right molars (broken side).  I thought I’d be wiped by the end of the day, and I really wasn’t.

I’ve noticed a lot of blogs about wired jaws abruptly end when the wires come off.  I was (and still am) very curious about the recovery process after, so I am going to continue to write for a while to help others know what they can expect. Of course everyone is different and I think my case was minor overall in comparison to others. I only broke my mandible in one spot on the right side and my bite was not compromised at all.

Wireless!

8 Jul

I had my wires and arch bars removed this morning! It was a pretty quick procedure, I went into surgery at 7:15 and walked out of the hospital shortly after 8.  I can open my mouth about one finger width.  There is muscle fatigue, especially on the left side.  My lower teeth look a little black, I’m hoping that is from the Novocaine they had squirted into my mouth. After we left the hospital we went out to breakfast!! I had a biscuit, eggs over medium, potatoes and a sausage patty.  The sausage was very difficult to eat. It was a little too chewy.  They eggs were relativly easy, I just broke them into small pieces and shoved them in. The potatoes were OK as long as they were not charred (I usually like those ones the best!), the biscuit was OK except some of the top crusty part.  Given I can only open my mouth about a finger width getting fork with food in is hard, so I think small finger food will be best for a couple days.  When we got home I brushed my teeth. It felt so good to really brush the front! I couldn’t fit the toothbrush in to the back, even with a child sized toothbrush, I was able to stick the water pik in though. My gum’s are bloody, but that is to be expected.  I’m going to call the dentist later today to schedule a cleaning and consult to fix my chipped tooth.

On the pain scale I’m less than a 1 when I’m not moving my mouth and probably a 2-3 when I move it.  It’s weird when I open my mouth I feel like it is WIDE open, and really isn’t! The doctor said to just move it around throughout the day to exercise the muscles and get them used to moving again.

Feeling sleepy now, so off to take a nap. I’ll post an update later.

Last Wired Post!

7 Jul

In 13 hours I will be going under to have my wires and arch bars removed! It all seems too good to be true.

In the last couple of days it feels like my jaw wants to move. It’s a hard feeling to explain, but there are times when it feels like it’s going to move and the arch bars hurt a little.  I’m hoping this is a good sign that it has truly recovered and that I will have a smooth recovery from the removal.

The next time I write I will be Wireless!!! Here’s hoping that I can eat breakfast tomorrow morning . . .

Day 27

7 Jul

Breakfast: Same old shake

Lunch: Clam Chowder

Snack: V8 Fusion, Meal Replacement Shake

Snack: Good Times Large Vanilla Milk Shake

Dinner: Butternut Squash Soup

At this point, I have to admit I can’t stand eating through a straw. Tomorrow is the last day, I have a feeling I’m going to put nutritional needs aside and just eat whatever I want (through a straw). Luckily my removal is scheduled incredibly early on Thursday morning so I will be able to have three semi-regular meals.
