Wireless Day 2 & 3

I’ve been feeling pretty good.  My teeth hurt a little bit less than they did on day one and they are not nearly as black looking. I’m guessing that was just some type of bruising from being clamped together. There seems to be a correlation between the pain and how black they looked. I can almost open my mouth as wide as two fingers.  One of the biggest things I’m really enjoying is being able to breathe again! We moved a lot of furniture around the house today and I never felt winded.  Tomorrow we are planning on going for a bike ride, my first since the crash.

I’ve been eating solids, but soft solids.  Yesterday was Cream of Wheat, macaroni and cheese and then cod with rice and veggies for dinner.  Today I had scrambled eggs, pasta, chicken and squash. It feels so good to be able to actually eat dinner with my husband again!

Wireless Day 1

I was out of the removal surgery by 8 am, so I had a full day 1.  By the end I could open my mouth about 1.5 fingers. I got two fingers in after doing some stretches with my jaw. I tried to take a nap all day, but couldn’t. It may have been because I had a cup of coffee for the first time in 5 weeks at breakfast!  I ate humus with flour tortillas for lunch. I tore them into bite sized pieces. It was a little painful, but not horrible.  I had a cheese stick for a snack.  I let it sit out a little to warm up so it’d be a little softer.  That was pretty easy to eat.  For dinner we had ravioli with pesto. Again, I broke it into bite sized pieces to limit chewing and especially breaking it apart with my front teeth.  I ate my whole plate and for the first time chewed with my right molars (broken side).  I thought I’d be wiped by the end of the day, and I really wasn’t.

I’ve noticed a lot of blogs about wired jaws abruptly end when the wires come off.  I was (and still am) very curious about the recovery process after, so I am going to continue to write for a while to help others know what they can expect. Of course everyone is different and I think my case was minor overall in comparison to others. I only broke my mandible in one spot on the right side and my bite was not compromised at all.

Day 27

Breakfast: Same old shake

Lunch: Clam Chowder

Snack: V8 Fusion, Meal Replacement Shake

Snack: Good Times Large Vanilla Milk Shake

Dinner: Butternut Squash Soup

At this point, I have to admit I can’t stand eating through a straw. Tomorrow is the last day, I have a feeling I’m going to put nutritional needs aside and just eat whatever I want (through a straw). Luckily my removal is scheduled incredibly early on Thursday morning so I will be able to have three semi-regular meals.

Day 26

Breakfast: Same old shake

Lunch: Clam Chowder soup, blended

Snack: Two meal replacement shakes, V8 Fusion

Dinner: Cashew Chicken from the local Chinese restaurant, blended with rice and chicken broth.

Day 25

5 Jul

Breakfast: Same Old Shake

Lunch: Butternut Squash Soup mixed with milk and 1/5 a block of tofu.

Snack: Meal Replacement Shake, V8 Fusion

Dinner: Hamburger, blended with a pepper, beef broth and some ketchup. It was actually pretty good. Canned green beans blended using the water in the can.

Day 24

4 Jul

Breakfast: Same old shake

Lunch: Microwave franks and beans thinned with chicken broth! This was one of those microwave cup things you buy at the grocery store. It was actually pretty good.

Snack: Meal Replacement Shake, V8 Fusion and 16oz Naked Green Juice

Dinner: Blended BBQ! I had chicken blended with beans and a little chicken broth and creamed corn blended with milk. Good, but not nearly as good as the real thing. I’m now craving real BBQ.

We started our bar remodel today, which meant tiling over our fireplace. I was wiped! I went to bed around 9 and didn’t wake up until 8:30! I guess the lack of calories got to me.

Social Events

So, I have to admit, social events are very difficult with your jaw wired shut.  Generally these events are a little bit louder, so people have a really hard time understanding me.  When new people introduce themselves I hate to feel stand-offish, but I really don’t have it in me to small talk and get to know someone new right now. The other really difficult part is food! ARGH it smells so good, and I can’t eat it!! We went to a b-day party tonight for a friend of ours at the local brewery we hang out at. I always like going there, but I’ve found especially now that it is comforting because the don’t serve food so I don’t have to look strange either not eating or eating through a straw.  I also know a lot of people there and they want to know how I’m doing, but they also completely understand that I’m not going to be as talkative as I’d like to be.  Anyway, the party was catered with BBQ.  It smelled amazing and I was surrounded by it as I drank my Naked Green Machine shake.  I actually put my finger on my husbands plate so I could put a little of the sauces in my mouth and taste them.  I ended up taking home a plate to blend, but it really isn’t the same.  I hate being a party poopper because I have to go home and blend my food.  Oh well  . . . next week I should be able to kind-of chew again.

Day 23

Breakfast: Same Old Shake

Lunch: Stouffers Turkey and veggies microwave meal, blended with milk

Snack: Meal Replacement Shake

Dinner: Ravioli, blended with pasta sauce

Snack: DQ Chocolate shake

Day 22

2 Jul

Breakfast: Same old shake

Lunch: Stouffers Swedish meatballs blended with milk

Snack: Milk Shake, V8 Fusion

Dinner: Tacos! Ground Turkey w/ taco seasoning, 1/2 avocado, 1/2 can corn, 1/2 can of Rotell, 1 soft tortilla and about 1/3 cup of chicken broth. As I said to my husband “It is really good and I hope I never have to eat it again!”

Snack: Meal Replacement Shake
